Sustainability, organic Farming, unfiltered wines, and returning what they raise and nurture back into the soil and life, is the philosophy of this family owned and operated vineyard and winery. The property of this vineyard has been in their family for three generations. This lends to and safeguards a level of long and careful family land management.
While most of the wineries in the Sierra Foothills use little or no chemicals in the farming of the vineyards, Chateau Davell takes their lifestyle very serious when it comes to all aspects of their wine venture. Great wines produced without pesticides, herbicides and the natural beauty of rich soils and the almost perfect climate of the Sierra foothills, establish a protected growing environment.
The family also runs a micro-farm that works together with the organic and sustainable vineyard. Farm sheep oversee weed management and the chickens do the pest control. The careful land management over three generations ensures a biodiversity that acts like a kind of immune system for the vineyard.
One of the secrets of owner Eric Hays, also the master winemaker at Chateau Davell, is the extremely small lot process of wine production he utilizes. The wines are not filtered or fined, ensuring a quality bouquet, body and flavor not typically found in large batch wine production. Even the wine labels are each unique and personal, featuring a custom painted portrait of one of the Hays family members on each bottle label.
Besides the pesticide, herbicide and chemical-fertilizer free grape crop, extra care is taken in almost all areas of natural and sustainable practices. Dyes and fining agents are never added to the wines. Bottling is done by hand and the glass is from recycled content. The wine labels are made with 100% post-consumer wastepaper. Even the corks are FSC Certified.
A trip to this winery is a trip back in time to simpler and more natural practices. From the rustic tasting room, to the outdoor seating area with a view of farm animals, you’ll appreciate the entire back-to-nature experience.
